Tina Fey was eyeing a long-rumored stage adaptation of the hit 2004 comedy film Mean Girls, that starred Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams. And now the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 3 's writer and Netflix co-star has finally announced that work on the musical is underway!
The musical will, for the most part, follow the script of the original movie. The show will also be modeled after more classical Broadway productions. Unfortunately, Fey said she won't be performing in the show. She will instead find someone else to play her character, Ms. Norbury.
The 45-year-old had been busy writing and producing her Netflix hit The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. But with the delay because of Ellie Kemper’s pregnancy, she’ll be working with her husband, composer Jeff Richmond, and lyricist Nell Benjamin, full-time over the coming months in putting the Mean Girls musical together.
"We’re working on the musical adaptation, and thanks to Ellie Kemper’s pregnancy, we have this whole summer to work on it,” she revealed during the Tribeca Film festival.
The conversation with TV Guide’s Damian Holbrook was a rapid fire session ranging from hilarious quips about the current presidential election to teases regarding upcoming projects.
Since a whole lot has changed since the movie came out 12 years ago, especially social media and smartphones being such a huge part of our lives. Those things weren’t around as much back then so Fey is looking at whether or not the Plastics are going to be texting each other or stick to their infamous Burn Book.
“The thing about social media is that it doesn’t dramatize well,” she said. “It’s been a question of like, ‘Yeah, do you take out things that are now outdated like three-way calling and stuff?'”
