FX The Americans S04E06: The Rat Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys' Jennings Premiere Recap

FX continues with the Season 4 premiere of The Americans. In episode 5, The Rat, will Elizabeth (Kerri Russell) and Philip (Matthew Rhys) Jennings be able to keep their family safe as they go deeper undercover?

Elizabeth and Philip are in bed together, joking around and feeling each other up. Elizabeth doesn't think he's stupid;he's just doing the right thing. Martha (Alison Wright) opens her drawer and takes out her gun. She looks at her place like it's the last time she'll be there. 

Stan (Noah Emmerich) goes over Martha's file and learns about her abortion. Beeman keeps going over his head about the married man she keeps seeing. William (Dylan Baker) tells Philip he will return a hero in a coffin. William cannot get more Glanders but he can bring in some "nasty stuff." 

Philip debates about pulling Martha out. William warns him that their bosses don't know what they are doing. As Clark, Philip then takes Martha off the streets and takes her to a safe-house. he then introduces her to Gabriel (Frank Langella), who promises he can fix this. Gabriel needs Martha around, but Philip says she's done. 

Elizabeth is shocked to discover Philip has revealed himself to Martha. Back at home, Elizabeth is teaching Paige (Holly Taylor) how to cook. While her kids are playing around, Martha realizes Elizabeth is not Philip's sister; they are involved together. Martha just wants to be with him, kisses him, and asks him to run away with her. The two then have passionate sex as Gabriel listens in to their lovemaking. 

Stan gets suspicious when Martha doesn't show up at work. Gabriel has a mission for Philip and wants him to leave. Philip then goes to see Martha and finds the gun she has been hiding. Oleg (Costa Ronin) is given order to exterminate Martha. Beeman looks into the man Martha has been seeking, doubting this lawyer is a businessman.

Stan tells his FBI boss that Martha is bad. He goes over the evidence gathered against everything Martha has said. Stan's boss wonders if Martha is indeed a traitor. She has been working for him for over 10 years; that's crazy he says. 

At a shipyard, Elizabeth smokes at a nearby bench as her surveillance looks around. She notices a car drive-by as Philip shows up at the meet. William then hands over the dead lab rat. Asking about Martha, William remembers how he didn't say anything when the Center sent his wife away.

After Philip drives away, Martha shows up in the kitchen with Gabriel. Martha hesitates and walks away from him. Stan meets with his boss, who now realizes he was all wrong about Martha. Stan wants to believe he's wrong about Martha though; they trusted her.

Martha picks up her bag and realizes her gun is missing. After stepping out of the house, Martha starts an argument with Gabriel. After warning him about his KGB secrets, Martha stands up for herself and walks away from Gabriel.
