Shonda Rhimes is playing no games when it comes to serving up the shock factor this season with Scandal. After the last episode, things can't get any worse with Olivia (Kerry Washington) when it comes to her love life. In "Buckle Up" Olivia and Abby (Darby Stanchfield) are battling each other in the race to make their candidate win the endorsement of Florida's governor. The former friends may realize that they bit off more than they can chew.
Last episode, we saw as Olivia isolated herself from everyone except her father after dealing with murdering Andrew Nichols. But of course, Liv always has a hidden agenda. She makes her father Rowan (Joe Morton) believe that she is going out for a run when in actuality she is working on discovering the reason behind Jake (Scott Foley) and Vanessa's (Joelle Carter) upcoming nuptials.
After all of Olivia's poking, prodding and scheming, she gets Jake right where she wants him, vulnerable and ready to tell the truth. She already knows that Rowan has been using Vanessa's money to fund Edison's (Norm Lewis) presidential campaign. But she learns from Jake that the whole marriage is just a ploy to shape his image so that he can run as Edison's potential vice president on the Democratic ticket. A high profile wedding with over 600 guests and President Grant (Tony Goldwyn) as his best man will increase his presence in the public eye.
With honesty in the air, Olivia finally decides that she is ready to commit too. She tells Huck (Guillermo Diaz) that she is ready to be happy but of course Rowan is not going to let anything come in between his plans. Jake and Olivia come up with a plan to jilt Vanessa at the altar. A move so cold and calculated America wouldn't even think of nominating him to represent the country. Rowan always being in tune with things discovers their plan and tells Olivia that he will slit Jake's throat if he doesn't go through with the wedding.
In an effort to save his life, Olivia tells Jake that she doesn't want to be with him and emasculates his manhood all at once. Love can be so complicated sometimes.
In the teaser for Episode 19, Mellie (Bellamy Young) scolds Olivia for her ongoing beef with Abby. The two ladies are at each other's throats in the political race to get their candidates a step further. Abby makes a bold move and Olivia tells her that she can't go through with her plans. How far will these former friends go? Next week we will all learn.
Episode 19 of Scandal will air on Thursday at 9/8c on ABC.
