Nearly 30 years after Alan Moore and Brian Bolland gave the world what's arguably the best version of DC's psycho villain, The Joker, Batman: The Killing Joke has made it to movie form -- and the first trailer's here. In it, Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill, who respectively voiced Batman and The Joker on Batman: The Animated Series, return for this R-Rated tale of violence.

The trailer for the animated film was released through Yahoo Movies last Tuesday. In the first full trailer for the summer release, we get a few previously shown bits (like the Joker torturing James Gordon and forcing him into madness), we get glimpses into Batman walking into Arkham to speak to the psychotic villain.

Repeating the theme from Moore's graphic novel, in the trailer we can see the Joker pressing Gordon and torturing him, saying all it takes is one bad day to make anyone flip out. This film will be told in different timelines: it'll provide a backstory for the Joker, another one for Barbara Gordon/Batgirl (which was left out of the original comic) and a "present-day" story in which The Joker kidnaps Gordon and his daughter to make a point about madness and try to prove anyone can be corrupted.

Because of its violent content, the film already received an R-Rating, which has been applauded by fans: it means the story's staying true to the spirit of its comic book version. As IGN points out, this is actually the first time a DC Universe Original Movie receives this hard rating.

Batman: The Killing Joke, which also stars the voice talents of Ray Wise as Commissioner James Gordon and Tara Strong as Batgirl, will see its world premiere next July during the San Diego Comic-Con, and it will be released at some point in the summer in home media.
