Days after the latest trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse confirmed that Hugh Jackman would have at least a small role in the epic superhero showdown, production for his last outing in the Wolverine 3 movie is gearing up. Richard E. Grant, who recently played Roger Bulstrode in the British miniseries Jekyll & Hyde, has joined the superhero movie as a mad scientist!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the English actor will be joining Jackman in his last run playing iconic mutant Wolverine. While little is known about the film's plot so far, it has been established that Grant's role will be that of "a villainous mad-scientist type."
He joins the cast which also includes Narcos star Boyd Holbrook (as the main antagonist) and Patrick Stewart, who will be reprising his role as Professor Xavier, the leader of the X-Men.
Deadline reports that Grant isn't the only Brit recently announced as part of the cast: actor/writer and Ricky Gervais often-collaborator Stephen Merchant (who last year had a recurring guest role on The Big Bang Theory) will also be part of the film, in an undisclosed role.
The still-untitled Wolverine 3 will bring an end to almost two decades of Jackman playing the fast-healing mutant. He first took on the role in 2000 for the first X-Men film, and has played the character in six movies since, most recently a starring role in the 2014 timeline mash-up X-Men: Days of Future Past.
While many of the main mutant characters from the franchise have been recast in recent years after the franchise was rebooted with X-Men: First Class, Jackman remains the only actor to play The Wolverine -- partly because of his love for the role and also because one of the characters' traits is the fact he doesn't age.
Jackman will say farewell to the character that made him a star when Wolverine 3 hits theaters on March 3, 2017.
