Due to much critical acclaim and fan applause, Netflix has officially announced Marvel's The Punisher spinoff. After making making his debut in Marvel's Daredevil Season 2, Twitter had lots to say about Jon Bernthal returning as Frank Castle in his own series.
As we previously mentioned, Matt Murdock (Cox) was a young boy when he was struck blind after a near fatal car accident. Though everyone thinks he lives in complete darkness, radioactive chemicals gave him back his sight. By day, Murdock pretends to be the blind lawyer attending courtroom battles. The man without fear continues his crime-fighting adventures after defeating Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio), which nearly came with a heavy cost. In the sophomore season, the man without fear with The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and Elektra (Elodie Yung).
Even after an online petition was set up, Marvel and Netflix could not ignore the fanbase any longer. According to Entertainment Weekly, Marvel's anti-hero is getting his own television series. This marks the sixth series ordered from the collaboration between Netflix and Marvel Television. The Walking Dead actor joins Thomas Jane, Dolph Lundgren, and Ray Stevenson who have stepped into the role. EW suggests Castle may at least show up in The Defenders, with its production date coming up.
In an interview with Marvel, Executive Producer and Showrunner Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) states, "After watching Jon's performance in 'Marvel's Daredevil' I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own."
