The search for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's big superheroine, Carol Danvers, is well underway, and it's time for rumors to fly around to see who will get to play Captain Marvel in the Disney franchise: Could Room actress Brie Larson be up for the role? Captain America himself Chris Evans is more than up for the idea!
Evans, whose Captain America: Civil War sequel is still in theaters and making billions for Marvel Studios, recently appeared at a panel at Wizard World Philadelphia, where he was asked what his thoughts were about Larson taking up the mantle of the Marvel superheroine.
Reminding the audience that the two worked together in the cult film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Evans called Larson "phenomenal" and said he "really hoped" she took the role.
You can watch the clip of Evans singing the actress' praises right here, via Comic Book, which also includes a characteristically comical Anthony Mackie saying Marvel should "go outside the box and cast, like, a dude" in the role, which got the Falcon actor a fair amount of boos.
A few days back, The Hollywood Reporter made it clear that the most recent Best Actress Oscar winner was circling the role of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in what's set to be the first female-led film in the MCU. Because of the importance of the character and the fact that DC has already introduced the best-known female superhero in comic book lore (namely Wonder Woman, a character that débuted on this year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, played by Gal Gadot), there has been a lot of speculation on who will snatch the role, with various names like British actress Emily Blunt and even UFC Women's star Ronda Rousey.
A few months back, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige told the press they could expect cast and crew announcements for Captain Marvel by the end of the summer.
It's being said that Larson could be the lead contender for the role of Marvel's big female superhero, but no official announcements have come from the studio or the actress. Considering she's still riding the wave of success from her recent Oscar win, it sounds likely she could dip her toe into the superhero franchise world.
With this summer's Civil War, Marvel added two major superheroes to its cinematic universe: a new iteration of Spider-Man (this time played by Tom Holland) and Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), the latter character getting a solo movie in 2018.
