Three years after Eva Green first charmed the world with her rendition of cursed 19th century lady Vanessa Ives in Showtime's Penny Dreadful, the Showtime series has reached its ending -- without any notice! In a surprising move, creator and showrunner John Logan revealed that what we thought to be the season finale of the series was in fact the end of the story.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Showtime CEO David Nevins confirmed that, in fact, the show had aired its last episode -- because the story they wanted to tell was already over. Now, be noted, the paragraphs below might contain spoilers for the series finale of Penny Dreadful, so, if you haven't seen the ending yet, you might want to step back.

"John [Logan] came in and said, "This needs to be the end of Vanessa Ives. I know exactly how I want to end it. And when Vanessa Ives, when that character, is done, I think the show is done," said Nevins. He also said they'd discussed what was the best way to tell fans that the show was over -- and ultimately decided to just do it after everything had happened, with no warning whatsoever.

"Well, why should we announce it to the world? Just to sort of ease the pain, ease the surprise? That's not how the world works."

While there had been no word regarding renewal of the series, seeing as it's only had three seasons on the air, fans didn't really expect it to be over so soon. Which is why it came as a surprise when, at the end of what was supposedly the season finale, "The Blessed Dark," cut to black with the words "The End."

By the end of last week's episode, the forever-haunted Vanessa (a role that earned Green a Golden Globe nomination in the last ceremony) finally caved in to evil and became the bride of Dracula (Christian Camargo), prompting basically the end of the world. Because of this, her friends in London spent the last two episodes of the series looking her up to find Dracula's lair, where she ultimately sacrificed herself because she would be cursed and pursued by evil until the end of days otherwise.

While it may have felt like there were a few loose ends in the show, Logan and Nevins talked to TV Line about how every character from the show ended with the fate they deserved -- from the immortal "monsters" being left alone to their devices to Ethan and Sir Malcolm (Josh Hartnett and Timothy Dalton) finding their lost families in each other.
