Harrison Ford's 'Indiana Jones 5' NOT Last: What's Next for Steven Spielberg Archeologist?

After playing Han Solo one last time in last year's smash, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, legendary actor Harrison Ford is coming back to another of his most iconic roles: star archaeologist and the coolest man in tweed: Indiana Jones. As the 73-year-old actor and franchise director Steven Spielberg prep up for the Lucasfilm sequel, one question remains: is this the end of the archaeologist?

People from website The Bearded Trio attended a recent press conference for Steven Spielberg's latest film, The BFG, and the Oscar-winning filmmaker took a moment to discuss plans for Indy 5, and it turns out that, besides Ford and Spielberg, two other key figures in the Indiana Jones world will also be present for the new film: composer John Williams and executive producer George Lucas.

It's interesting to note that this will mark the first time Lucas is involved in a Lucasfilm project since he sold the company to Disney: he was famously out of the creative team for last year's Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Considering all four Indiana Jones films so far have been directed by his close friend Spielberg, though, it makes sense he's involved in the making of the sequel; in fact, the Jaws director said it'd be "insane" to make an Indy movie without Lucas.

However, Lucas' involvement doesn't necessarily mean creative input, as previous reports said he wouldn't be involved in the story. This might be for the best, considering how downright terrible Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was.

Producers for the still-untitled Indiana Jones 5 are Frank Marshall and Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy, from a screenplay currently being penned by Jurassic Park writer, David Koepp. Even more interestingly, one thing seems to be certain so far: unlike Ford's Han Solo, Indy isn't about to die in this film, and there are more movies planned ahead.

So far, it remains unclear whether Shia LaBeouf, who played Indiana Jones' son in the latest installment of the franchise, will be coming back as a younger and fresher face in the world of fantasy archeology.

Bob Iger, Disney's CEO, recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss the future of Indiana Jones, and he explained there are plans to make it grow further than its three-decade life span.

"Right now, we're focused on a reboot, or a continuum and then a reboot of some sort," Iger said, then continuing upon being pressed. "I don't think it reaches the scale of the universe of Star Wars, but I see making more. It won't be just a one-off."
