Just days ahead of Lin-Manuel Miranda's departure from the Broadway smash, Hamilton, PBS has confirmed the release date of their own special revolving around the musical -- and fans of the rapping Founding Fathers will get to see them on their TV sets this fall! What can we expect from this special?
Last week, PBS announced through a press release that their Hamilton special, which will feature the original cast of the show (some of which will be stepping out by the early days of July). Even more interesting, the documentary special will actually contain 15 minutes worth of footage from the show for all of those who can't spare a few thousand dollars to see the Founding Fathers singing and dancing.
The PBS documentary, entitled Hamilton's America and set to debut on October 21, so far has a contract to only have 15 minutes of performance clips (it's unclear whether they'll be in order, though it sounds unlikely), all taken from the early days of the Broadway run. What does that mean? Everyone from the original cast recording will be around for the special, including Tony-nominated Jonathan Groff, who originated the role of King George III when it first hit the Richard Rodgers Theater last year and has since left the production.
Months back, the public TV station had said they'd be adding Hamilton to their Great Performances series, but the show only grew in the time since that original announcement. Throughout the year, the show won a Grammy Award, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and 11 Tonys, becoming by far and wide the hottest ticket on Broadway. The PBS doc will serve the double purpose of introducing more people to the musical and giving the fans that just own the soundtrack a further glimpse inside the room where it happens.
Starting next month, some of its main cast will go on to do other projects, with Eliza Schuyler Hamilton actress Phillipa Soo going on to star on the Broadway Amélie musical and Miranda already working on the soundtrack of Disney's Moana and signed up to co-star the Mary Poppins sequel with Emily Blunt. Leslie Odom Jr., who originated the role of third U.S. Vice President Aaron Burr and beat Miranda himself in the Best Actor Tony category, will also leave the production next month.
Although some of the original cast members are stepping down, there's still a lot ahead for Hamilton. Recently, Miranda announced the Hamilton Mixtape would be released next November, and the show has just announced productions in Chicago, London's West End and a U.S. national tour.
