Wreck-It-Ralph could very well be the most underrated film to come out of Walt Disney Animation Studios in the past few years, and its lovable characters and numerous video game references kind of got a little lost in the crowd during a great year for animated movies, but it's finally getting what it deserves: a sequel with an official release date!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has just approved a yet-untitled Wreck-It-Ralph sequel, set to début on March 9, 2018. It'll be the next film lined up for the studio after this year's Polynesian-set princess film Moana, a few months before the Jack and the Beanstalk retelling Gigantic.
The team for Wreck-It-Ralph 2 seems to be the same as the one in the original film. Oscar nominee John C. Reilly will reprise his role as the grouchy and misunderstood video game villain, Sarah Silverman will play Vanellope von Schweets, and hopefully Jane Lynch will return as Sergeant Calhoun and 30 Rock actor Jack McBrayer will reprise the voice role of Fix-It Felix Jr.
Behind the scenes, original film co-writer Phil Johnson will join production as co-director and writer, with original director Rich Moore helming once again. Zootopia director Clark Spencer will also be involved in the sequel, as a producer.
Moore spoke to Collider after Wreck-It-Ralph 2 was announced, and while plot details for the sequel remain a secret this early in production, one thing is clear: retro arcade gaming will be meeting the Internet! The movie will be "about the Internet and less about arcade games," so it makes sense that somehow Ralph could make his way into online gaming.
As far as title is concerned, there's one option going around: Super Wreck-It-Ralph -- but as awesome as that sounds, perhaps we shouldn't get our hopes up.
"The one thing is because it's so about the Internet and less about arcade games, it might not be the perfect fit," said Moore. "But spiritually, it is my favorite frontrunner right now. But I'm not sure if it's going to make the cut, man. But it's definitely in the running."
The first film made over 470 million in the worldwide box office, but when it came to awards season it failed to nab the Best Animated Feature Oscar, as it was competing against a fellow Disney giant: Pixar, with Brave.
In any case, we'll be getting more of "I'm gonna wreck it!" in just a couple of years!
