There's currently nothing airing weekly on the Marvel Studios front, as the next Netflix series, Luke Cage, won't reach the platform until next September and Agent Carter was canceled. The first Marvel Cinematic Universe series, ABC's Agents of SHIELD, is reaching its fourth season in a couple of months -- and rumor has it that iconic character Ghost Rider could join!
According to Coming Soon, the rumors of Ghost Rider's appearance in the Marvel ABC show first began a few weeks back when a new poster appeared on a San Diego trolley, teasing Marvel's return to Comic-Con this summer. Though not showing anybody (neither the already-established cast nor anyone new), the teaser did include a fiery chain, which is the staple weapon used by the character.
Still, this image has already appeared on Agents of SHIELD. Last season, Inhuman Secret Warriors character J.T. James/Hellfire (played by Axle Whitehead) had one just like it, so it's unclear whether it belongs to him -- but still, he could still be working with Ghost Rider.
Weeks after that first poster lit up rumors all over the web, there might be more evidence of the character popping into the secret agency: the show's looking to cast a character that very much sounds like Ghost Rider. TV Line reports that they're currently looking to add "a pair of Latino brothers, one of whom is always the most dangerous person in the room, the other paralyzed in a wheelchair" -- and this sounds remarkably like it could be the Reyes brothers, Robbie and Gabe.
Robbie Reyes was introduced as the new Ghost Rider back in 2014, and it was actually supervillain Mr. Hyde (who Agents of SHIELD viewers will know as Daisy's dad, Calvin) who revives him and turns him into the flaming and ghostly anti-hero.
While it's rare to see characters or storylines introduced to the MCU so soon after they were first published in the comic books, it would make for a fairly interesting twist. Due to the comic book connection, it could also mean that Daisy's dad could pop his head back into the series, and it's always a joy to have Kyle MacLachlan in anything, really -- though it'd be interesting to see how he'd make an appearance, seeing as his memory was erased and he doesn't remember anything of his past life as a supervillain.
Agents of SHIELD will return to ABC on Tuesday, September 20th at 10 pm ET.
