After a Grammy, a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and 11 Tony Awards, Broadway smash Hamilton is changing up its cast, with three of its biggest stars leaving: creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr and Phillipa Soo as Eliza Schuyler Hamilton. After it was announced Javier Muñoz would take over as Alexander Hamilton, who will play his wife and his rival?
According to Playbill, it'll be two-time Tony nominee Brandon Victor Dixon taking over the role of the victor of the famous American duel. His past credits include Shuffle Along and The Color Purple, and he'll begin performing at some point in August.
Lexi Lawson, on the other hand, will be taking the role of Hamilton's wife (and Schuyler sister) Eliza, starting July 11. While she's a Broadway newcomer, it's not the first time she steps into the shoes of a leading lady written by Miranda: she played Vanessa in the national tour of his first Tony-winning musical, In the Heights.
Lawson also has a role in common with one of her fellow Hamilton cast members: much like recent Tony winner Renée Elise Goldsberry, she played Mimi in Rent, also in a national tour of the iconic rock musical.
As Muñoz is now the primary Alexander Hamilton, Michael Luwoye will begin as the alternate to the role on July 11.
The rest of the main cast, including Goldsberry and fellow Tony winner Daveed Diggs, will remain the same, including Christopher Jackson playing George Washington, Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds, Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton and Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison. Original King George III actor Jonathan Groff stepped down from the production back in April, and he was replaced by Book of Mormon alum Rory O'Malley.
Each of the three original cast members leaving the production has big things ahead of them. Miranda is already working on the soundtrack to Walt Disney Animation's next film, Moana, and he's also scheduled to play an original role in an upcoming sequel to Mary Poppins. Odom Jr., on his part, seems to be focusing on his music, with a recently released a self-titled début album.
Soo will be the only Hamilton cast member staying in Broadway immediately after stepping down from the show: she's already been announced as the lead in the Amélie musical. She'll be crossing paths with onstage husband Miranda soon, though, as she'll be voicing a role in Moana.
