Days after the first Justice League trailer showed the first scenes of Ezra Miller's awesome-looking portrayal of Barry Allen, Warner has announced the latest bit of casting news from The Flash movie: Kiersey Clemons, best known for her roles in Dope and this year's Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, is joining the DC Extended Universe as the superhero's girlfriend, Iris West.
The announcement was made through Variety, after rumors began days earlier that Clemons was the leading contender to land the role of Barry Allen's girlfriend. While she has been officially cast in the film, so far the notion that she'll be playing Iris West, there's no official word on the matter.
The people behind the DCEU are currently focusing on its next big releases: next week, the supervillain team-up film Suicide Squad will hit the big screen, followed by the stand-alone Wonder Woman film and the currently filming Justice League one, the latter of which will feature Miller as The Flash and perhaps even Clemons in the role of Iris.
While the production of the upcoming The Flash movie seemed to be in trouble for a while after original director Seth Grahame-Smith left the project, now that Dope director Rick Famuyiwa is on board, it seems the film will continue its shooting schedule as if nothing had happened. It also means Famuyiwa was able to bring in someone he's already worked in, Clemons, by also adding a new tone of diversity to the production.
As Birth Movies Death reports, the character of Iris West is traditionally white in the comics, but this isn't the first time there's been a turn in the character's ethnicity in recent years: Candice Patton has been playing the character on The CW for the past two seasons, and of course, the fact that it's been played by a woman of color hasn't posed an issue when it comes to the authenticity of the character.
The Flash as a character has seen a resurgence due to the series based on the character, where Barry Allen is played by Grant Gustin, a fan favorite in the role. The movie version, starring The Perks of Being a Wallflower actor Miller, has received some criticism over not taking Gustin into account, particularly considering the show has turned into the most successful one in The CW's history.
We should expect more casting news about The Flash in the next months, and the film is set for a March 16, 2018 release date.
