DJ Steve Aoki has accomplished more than most DJs of his time. He has been labeled as one of the most popular and one of the most highly-paid by Forbes, he has played in more than 250 shows last year and has released more than 800 records under his own name, so what more could he ask for?
Time posted an exclusive interview with the soft-spoken DJ with waist-length hair and revealed more about the changes that have happened to him very recently. Steve now shrugs off his cake-throwing lifestyle, which made him famous by the way, and embraced his more somber side. He claims he is not much of a partier anymore and he has been sober for 7 years.
Aoki proudly revealed his secret to bring the party to the masses. He said that sobriety gives him the clarity to connect with his audience. It has also allowed him to do more work as evidenced by the record-breaking number of shows he did last year.
Meanwhile, Bucks Local News also reported on Steve Aoki and mentioned his new documentary show on Netflix "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead." Debuting at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York earlier this year, it is now available for a wider audience.
"I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" focuses on the life of Aoki when he was just a boy in Orange County. The 38-year old DJ recalled how he was an outcast in school and was often the subject of ridicule and racial discrimination especially during classes. But he claims that he is glad that all of these happened or else he would not be what he is today.
Steve Aoki said that he could have just grown up in Irvine where he could be protected by Asian people and spared himself from discrimination but this would have made his life different. He said: "At the end of the day, the struggles are as important as the achievements and if you don't have those struggles then the achievement isn't nearly as priceless."
Of course "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" will also feature Steve's rise to fame and how he has reached the statuses of popular DJs. The documentary will show Aoki's antics that his followers relate with all his shows. There are plenty of pyrotechnics, jumping around tables, crowd surfing on inflatable rafts and throwing of sheet cakes on the audience's faces.
