While some superstars joined their families in a Thanksgiving dinner at home or at a posh restaurant, "Divergent: Ascendant" star Shailene Woodley preferred to give thanks at Standing Rock.
According to reports, Shailene Woodley chose sub-freezing temperatures and the company of Native tribes as they protect one of the largest freshwater resources in the country. And their plight to stop the construction of the pipeline to preserve clean water has not fallen on deaf ears. Woodley together with a number of other celebrities like Jane Fonda brought the protest.
Indian Country Today Media Network reported how the "Ascendant" star and the rest of the protesters spent their holiday. The report highlighted Jane Fonda's kindness as she brought an army of volunteers and of course, Thanksgiving food.
Reports even noted that Fonda donated seven butchered bison and four Mongolian yurts. The protesters also enjoyed dessert courtesy of Ben & Jerry's who donated ice cream.
Judy Wicks, founder of White Dog Café in Philadelphia was the one who organized the dinner. She was accompanied by 50 chefs to cook dinner for everyone. BN Ranch also donated 30 pasture-raised turkeys. The volunteers also constructed a makeshift community center made out of straw.
The Guardian reported that aside from Woodley, actors like Mark Ruffalo and Patricia Arquette have supported the protesters at Standing Rock. They visited the area and provided solar panels and composting toilets. Actresses like Susan Sarandon and Rosario Dawson have also expressed their support online and regularly tweets the condition of people at Standing Rock.
Woodley is an active voice for Native Americans who are fighting to reclaim their land and for clean water. She was there when North Dakota law enforcement team sprayed water, rubber bullets, and tear gas on the protesters. She called for the cessation of the dispersal and for more help through her official Twitter account.
On the other hand, Woodley's movie "Divergent: Ascendant" is allegedly officially canceled and Lionsgate has reportedly announced that it would be made into a television movie instead. As a result, reports swirl around that the actress expressed her disapproval. However, she clarified that she respects the decision and would not want to be a part of the TV movie.
Her movie being canceled might just be a way for Shailene Woodley to completely focus on her cause. People of Standing Rock really need people like her who are willing to give up a warm Thanksgiving holiday for a fight for clean water and life.
