Lenovo today said it was thinking of updating its 2017 ThinkPad laptops to include newer processors, more features, and importantly improved TrackPads. The TrackPads has been a weakness with previous versions of the ThinkPad laptops.
Recent laptops including the ThinkPad X270, the ThinkPad Yoga 370, four new ThinkPad T Ultrabook models, will include support for Microsoft's Windows Precision Touchpad, a new interface for configuring touchpad gestures and was released with the launch of Windows 10.
The new ThinkPads will run on Intel's new Core Processor, Kaby Lake. It'll get updated authentication features, a facial recognition feature and biometric matching on fingerprint sensor to go with. Apparently, according to Lenovo these features were added to support customers in Europe, where security requirements are more in a laptop.
The new ThinkPads: ThinkPad X270 will include a touch display option, it's starting price is $909 and available from March 2017. ThinkPad Yoga 370 will have a full HD 13.3-inch display and also available from March next year. The initial price of this model is $1264. The four new ThinkPad Ultrabook models have a variety of customisations and starting price of $909.
The ThnikPad L are 14-inch and 15-inch laptops, starting at $779 and $909 respectively. ThinkPad 13 which is specifically aimed at students starts at $609. The new laptops like Yoga 370, will be coming in silver in addition to black.
We all know Lenovo is one of the largest PC maker by shipment, it first acquired the ThinkPad business from IBM in 2004. Until now, it's by far the company's most biggest and successful business.
However, a contraction in PC market hasn't been good. In the company's most recent earnings report, PC and smartphone device business group shipped about 14.5 million units for the quarter, down by almost 3.3 percent from the previous years.
The ThinkPad announcement is coming just ahead of the CES, where it is widely expected that Lenovo will have more news in line to its laptops and tablets.
