Broadway musical "The Color Purple" gave a warm reception to former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on Sunday.

Clinton, who has kept a relatively low-profile since losing the election to Donald Trump made a rare public appearance at the final performance of the Broadway revival "The Color Purple," New York Times reported. Clinton was accompanied by her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and their daughter Chelsea. She received three standing ovations from the sold-out crowd upon her arrival and when she was acknowledged by the cast of the show.

Actress Patrice Covington said that there are several notable people in the audience that day but only called out Clinton saying, "We love you, Hillary." Clinton returned the favour and said, "God bless you."

In contrast, Vice President-elect Mike Pence received the opposite welcome when he turned up to see "Hamilton" in November, a week after he and President-elect Donald Trump won the election. While people cheered upon seeing Clinton, Pence received boos. The performance reportedly had to be paused multiple times because of jeers from the crowd who are not pleased to see Mr. Pence, Independent reported.

Actor Brandon Dixon delivered an open message directed to Pence on behalf of the cast and crew.

"We sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights," he said.

"The Color Purple" tells the triumphant story of a beleaguered black woman who had been oppressed by men in rural Georgia in the early 20th century. The musical is an adaptation of Alice Walker's novel of the same name that received the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1983. It opened on Broadway in 2005.

Public sightings of Clinton had been scarce but she did say that she and her husband plan to attend the inauguration of Donald Trump on Jan. 20, 2017.
