When "The Fast and Furious" franchise returns for its next installment "Fast and Furious 8," it will turn its franchise on its heels as main star Vin Diesel will be featured as a villain. He will be joined on the dark side by a new character named Cipher, played by Charlize Theron.
Based on the trailer released for the movie, Dominic Toretto, Diesel's character will turn on his team and work together with the new character, which was described in the trailer as one of the most high profile hi tech terrorists in the world.
The trailer also showed another twist since Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) who was introduced in the last installment as brother of villain Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) Furious 7, will work together with Dom's team to take him down.
One of the main questions that the trailer poses would be why Dom would turn on his team, whom he considers his family and why he would work together with a criminal like Cipher.
A theory posed by Movie Pilot hints that Cipher may be manipulating Dom to do her bidding by keeping his sister Mia hostage. The report further suggested that Cipher, being highly advanced in terms of technological plots, could be exericisng some sort of mind control over Dom to get him to actively work against his family.
Meanwhile, another fan theory suggests that there might be more to the new villain than meets the eye as it was speculated that a deeper connection exists between the character and Brian O'Connor, the character portrayed by the late Paul Walker. Furthermore, there is a possibility that Cipher is an old acquaintance of Brian and that Dom is trying to replay a debt owed to the new character.
For his part, Diesel said that challenging the concept of family is a logical direction to take for the film, Gamespot reported.
"It was inevitable that there would be a chapter that would challenge that concept of family. I guess it all makes sense when you see the film," he said.
