The "X-Men" movie franchise is currently at a standstill, with no news yet as to where it will lead to after last year's "X-Men: Apocalypse." The movie, however, offered a possible plot point for future "X-Men" movies, one that could heavily involve the "Dark Phoenix" saga from the comics.
The latest issue of Production Weekly revealed that the next "X-Men" movie is titled "X-Men: Supernova." The movie will begin production with working titles "Dark Phoenix" and "Teen Spirit," which appears to confirm speculations that the future "X-Men" movies will focus on "The Dark Phoenix Saga." Interestingly, the working title "Teen Spirit" fits perfectly with the rumor that the next film will take place in the 1990s. With the movie possibly taking place in the 1990s, this brings the entire "X-Men" franchise to full circle by getting as close as possible to the timeline in the 2000 "X-Men" film.
"The Dark Phoenix Saga" from the comic books is one of the most popular "X-Men" stories of all time. It centers on Jean Grey (played by "Game of Thrones" star Sophie Turner in the latest movie), who goes to outer space for a mission and thereafter gets possessed by a cosmic entity called Phoenix. She later turns evil and known as The Dark Phoenix.
Brett Ratner previously toyed around "The Dark Phoenix" arc in the 2006 film "X-Men: The Last Stand," but the adaptation wasn't portrayed well by fans of the films and the comics.
In "X-Men: Apocalypse," it appears that Jean Grey already has the Phoenix inside her and that it is only subdued or restrained. There are several scenes in the movie where Jean appears to be troubled by a powerful force that she is trying to control. In the latter part of the film, she defeats Apocalypse by emitting a massive force, enough to take the legendary mutant down.
Meanwhile, as the "X-Men" movies move forward, there is a possibility that the franchise might do a reboot of the first three "X-Men" films, given that "X-Men: Days of Future Past" basically wiped out the events in those three movies.
"It's not leading necessarily toward exactly where we found Patrick Stewart and the X-Men at the beginning of X-Men 1," Bryan Singer tells Collider about the timeline from "X-Men: Apocalypse" and up. "There are some things that lead in that general direction, that was part of the philosophy we had at the end of Days of Future Past is that you can't fully change the course or current of the river, but you can just divert it a little bit, and we diverted it a little bit."
