Adam Yauch, the Beastie Boy who was best known by his stage name of MCA, will have a Brooklyn playground dedicated to his memory. The Palmetto Playground in Brooklyn Heights will be renamed to honor the rapper who died of cancer last year at the age of 47.
The dedication ceremony will start at 11 a.m. Friday morning and feature appearances from Yauch's family, city and state politicians, and fellow Beastie Adam "Ad-Rock" Horowitz.
According to Rolling Stone, Yauch grew up in Brooklyn Heights and has a special connection with the park that contains amenities like basketball courts and a greenhouse. Yauch learned to ride his bike at the park while growing up in Brooklyn.
Yauch founded the Beastie Boys with Horowitz and Mike Diamond in 1979. The band began its life as a hardcore punk group, but began dabbling in hip-hop and it was there they found success. They released their first studio album Licensed to Ill in 1986, which cemented its place in history by becoming the first rap album to take the number 1 spot on the Billboard charts. A string of successful albums followed and the Beasties became cultural icons.
What do you think of the decision to name Palmetto Park in Brooklyn Heights after Adam "MCA" Yauch? Do you think it's nice that they found a place that Yauch had a personal connection to?
