Oscars Throwback: Leonardo DiCaprio’s Win and the Unexpected Climate Change Speech

With the 89^th Academy Awards just around the corner, it would be the best time to look at some memorable moments. One of the greatest moments was when six-time nominee Leonardo DiCaprio finally nabbed the elusive Oscar Award for Best Actor.

DiCaprio, who was first nominated for Best Actor in the 1994 film "What's Eating Gilbert Grape", successfully hit the mark with the award-giving body in 2015's "The Revenant". Playing as the frontiersman Hugh Glass, the movie was based on Michael Punke's book of the same name. Alejandro Inarritu also won an Oscar for Best Director for the said movie.

Presented by Julianne Moore, DiCaprio was possibly surprised, along with the whole world, when his name was called. Besting fellow nominees Bryan Cranston, Michael Fassbender, Matt Damon and Eddie Redmayne, he finally on his own Oscar. When he got up to take the Oscar, however, things went really unexpected.

After the usual speeches of thanking the academy, family, friends and whoever, DiCaprio used his time to warn everyone about climate change. Pointing out that climate change is real and is happening, he provided a passionate speech about working together. He urged to not take the planet for granted, as he did not take the Oscars for granted, E! recalled.

This year's Oscars is also something to remember, as Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone's musical "La La Land" lands 14 nominations. According to US Weekly, this puts the musical drama on equal footing as "All About Eve" and the Leo-led "Titanic" with the most nominations for a single film.

Hosted by talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, the Oscars will officially start on 8:30 pm EST on ABC, while the red carpet will be covered as early as 7pm. The whole show will also be available via live streaming through the ABC app or their website, abc.com.
