The British royal family is once again the main focus of another TV series in the US. FX announced on Tuesday that it has ordered a second season of the Ryan Murphy anthology, “Feud.” It will focus on the tumultuous marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
Queen Elizabeth may not be too pleased that another royal drama will be played out on TV. She is already the subject of the highly acclaimed series, “The Crown” where her early days as a young queen were shown.
“Feud: Charles and Diana” will be a 10-episode limited series and will air on 2018 according to LA Times. It will take viewers back to the complicated relationship between Charles, Prince of Wales, and the late Lady Diana Spencer, mother of William and Harry. They were married in 1981 but formally separated in 1992. A year after their official divorce in 1996, Princess Diana was killed in a Paris car crash.
The public has a continuing fascination with Princess Diana even after nearly 20 years since her death says a Vanity Fair report. She has been the subject of many movies and TV series including 2013’s “Diana” where Naomi Watts played her. The Oscar-winning “The Queen” primarily focused on the royal family’s reaction to her death. The aforementioned “The Crown” is also expected to focus on Charles and Diana in its Season 4 and 5.
Another person that might not welcome the new series about Prince Charles and Princess Diana is his second wife, Camilla Parker-Bowles. Her being portrayed once again as the other woman who was instrumental in the break-up of their marriage could not possibly be avoided. The public backlash over her affair with Prince Charles while he was still married might be resurrected. Camilla has been working hard to change the public’s perception of her and their being reminded of the past is the last thing she needs right now.
The first season of “Feud” will premiere on Sunday, March 5. It tackles the rivalry of two Hollywood queens, Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. Ryan Murphy has earlier indicated that the second season will have more juicy drama. He added, though, that he will never do another Hollywood feud again because nothing can top Joan and Bette.
Murphy is interested in the series because it is really about the human dilemma of pain of misunderstanding. He said that to have a big back story, a long period of time, as much as 20 to 40 years, is necessary. Nothing can be more applicable to this than the story of Princess Diana and Prince Charles.
