Upon the airing of "The Vampire Diaries" final episode for its final season, Klaus Mikaelson of "The Originals" received a shout out. From Friday's episode of "The Vampire Diaries", Caroline narrated how she received a very huge donation from Klaus Mikaelson for the school she and Alaric had opened up for supernatural children like them. Prior to that, Caroline did a crossover to "The Originals".
As recapped, Caroline was reading Stefan the riot act for abandoning her three years prior: "Meanwhile, I was so desperate I called Klaus for help - who's nowhere to be found, by the way." Caroline was referring to her visit to New Orleans during the crossover of "The Vampire Diaries" with "The Originals" previously on year 2016.
Screener TV reported that Stefan and Caroline broke up during the final season and Klaus' name was mentioned after their breakup. Fans of 'Klaroline' rejoice as they speculated that the couple will finally have their second chance at love in "The Originals" Season 4.
According to an interview published by TVLine on 2016, executive producer Julie Plec shared that the said shout out by Caroline was definitely a hint of a possible future crossover of her character. "This year, as we've crossed over, we've acknowledged [The Vampire Diaries and The Originals'] shared universe. As we know from 'The Originals', there's a prophecy predicting the demise of the Mikaelson family, so it was a nice little tease for viewers of that show to ask themselves, "Wait, what the hell happened to Klaus?"
Much recently, Julie Plec clarified that Caroline and Klaus might not actually meet yet in the upcoming season of "The Originals". Said reunion is currently impossible as the timelines of the two series do not match up yet. On the other hand, Plec also hinted on another possible spinoff that might from "The Originals".
Meanwhile, fans already know that Alaric is already confirmed and scheduled to make an appearance in "The Originals" season 4. "The Originals" Season 4 returns on CW starting on Friday.
