AMD Plans to Crush Nvidia in the Notebook GPU Market With its 'Vega' Architecture

AMD is under strong pressure after the release of NVidia's GeForce GTX 1080Ti. However, it still has a beast to unleash called "Vega". AMD is optimistic on its next generation architecture and plans to crush NVidia in the mobile GPU segment.

AMD "Vega" is the codename for next generation GPU architecture from AMD. At the AMD Tech Summit in Beijing, Scott Herkelman, AMD Vice President discussed the upcoming Vega-powered graphics cards. He also shared the company's plans to stay competitive in the notebook GPU market.

AMD might decrease the overall size and footprint of the"Vega" mobile GPUs by stacking VRAM dyes and freeing up more internal space without losing any performance. This would be a huge step for notebook PC segment as size is a major constraint for laptops and portables, reported DigitalTrends.

There still no concrete details available on the AMD "Vega" architecture. It might be a completed discrete graphics solution for the mobile GPU segment or it may come as an AMD APU which integrates CPU and a low-powered GPU for everyday processing tasks, reported PCAdvisor. AMD has high hopes with its "Vega" architecture and plans to outrun NVidia this time. AMD's previous architecture, code-named "Fiji" was unable to do so because of its high power consumption.

Herkelman also added that players will be able to play the latest and greatest "AAA games". So, we might conclude that AMD "Vega" for mobile will be a discrete GPU. He also said that new "Vega" architecture will be powerful enough to drive virtual reality content and will provide immersive gaming experience.

AMD "Vega" mobile chips are expected to come with either 4GB or 8GB RAM options. There is still no official timeline for these chips to hit the market. However, at the AMD Summit, Herkelman assured that "Vega"-powered chips are "just around the corner."
