For the first time in UEFA Champions League history, the final match-up will be between two German teams: Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. This two legs of the semifinals in April and earlier this month showed two determined German teams knock out two of the world's best football clubs: Barcelona and Real Madrid. Thanks to goal differentials, Dortmund moved on to the finals whereas Bayern completely destroyed Barcelona in both legs. The tide has shifted. Germany is officially an international football powerhouse country.
The match between Munich and Dortmund is being held at Wembley Stadium in London, England, today, May 25. After the semifinal matches, it looks like we are in for a treat for the championship. The winner will move on to play the champions of the Europa League tournament and also play in the 2013 Club World Cup semifinals as Europe's representative.
Though the odds are in Munich's favor, Dortmund can pull an upset especially with star center-back Mats Hummels fit for play.
"Yes, [I'm fit]," said Hummels at a press conference yesterday. "Fortunately the scare was a lot worse than the actual problem. My foot isn't quite as it was but it's in order for a match and I hope I'll be able to get through the last job of the season. On Sunday I realized it wasn't as bad as I thought and when I realized I was going to be fit, I was so, so happy."
"We've got a fantastic opportunity because this team has been growing for a number of years," he continued. "It's the most fantastic story of all and we're not thinking about losing. This is the biggest opportunity we've had so far as a team; that's what we thought about in the semi-finals and the quarter-finals. This was a huge motivation for us."
