John Oliver's first episode of "The Daily Show" as temporary host during Jon Stewart's absence to his movie Rosewater was last night and it was very impressive. His first celebrity interview as host was with Seth Rogen and the show was full of references to how weird it might seem that Oliver, a British comedian, is hosting this American political satire show. Stewart allegedly left Oliver a letter explaining that he would do a great job and that nothing big happens in the summer. Unfortunately, something huge is happening right now: the National Security Agency controversy
In his opening monologue, Oliver announced, "I am John Oliver, and let's all acknowledge for a moment that this is weird. This looks weird, it feels weird, it even sounds weird."
But moving into the stories of the day, Oliver got the chance to talk about the NSA situation.
"Jon Stewart barely out the door, and it turns out that not only is the government tracking everyone's phone calls, but that's just the tip of the [bleep]-berg," Oliver joked.
Oliver even got to introduce a new, original segment entitled "Good News, You're Not Paranoid." Clearly addressing the current state of affairs going on with the NSA, Oliver's new segment has made light of a strange situation just as we are used to seeing Stewart do. In other words, Oliver is off to a good start.
John Oliver also welcomed his first interview guest, Seth Rogen, last night. The two discussed Rogen's latest film This Is The End and talked about anxiety dreams and a few spoilers for the film. Rogen also got to discuss the NSA situation as well. Overall the interview went very well, too!
