Bob Marley is one of the most beloved musicians of all time, and it's easy to understand why his 1984 greatest hits compilation, "Legend," is equally beloved, having sold more than 14 million copies since its release in 1984. So it's arguable that Universal Records is taking a risk by releasing a new remixed version of the album.

"Legend Remixed," like the remastered CD released in 2002, will feature 16 of Marley most popular tracks, including "No Woman, No Cry," "I Shot The Sheriff" and "Exodus." Each track will be remixed, a move that could either lend a new perspective to the reggae artist's legacy or crush the souls of his fans. Some weren't too happy:

At least fans can take solace knowing that Marley's children are in full support of the project and it's not just a corporate scheme. In fact, Bob's sons Ziggy and Stephen are responsible for six of the remixes, including new interpretations of "Stir It Up," "Redemption Song" and "Buffalo Soldier."

The rest of the tracks are being handled by a coterie of musicians across a range of genres. There will be some EDM jams from artists such as Pretty Lights, but Jim James of My Morning Jacket is among the biggest names to take a shot. He told the Wall Street Journal about how surreal it was to work on his remix of "Waiting In Vain."

"I wanted to give the listener a sense of the same awe I felt when I first pulled up the multi-track masters and soloed out the vocals only," James said. "It was so unbelievable for me to finally be able to hear the voice I had loved for so long all by itself. So I built the opening around the vocal with minimal bass synth and percussion as well as adding some harmonies in myself."

You can hear James' version here:

The album does not feature any input from Marley's youngest son, hip-hop/reggae artist Damian Marley.
