Michael Jackson's family might be embroiled in a huge lawsuit against concert promoter AEG after the pop star's death, but that doesn't mean that his siblings won't play shows at AEG venues.
Jackson's brothers (Jermaine, Tito, Jackie and Marlon) will apparently take part in the BET Experience on June 30 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, a venue owned by AEG. Michael's mother Katherine, as well as his children, are currently embroiled in a lawsuit with the company over its alleged responsibility in the vocalist's death. The lawsuit is for as much as $40 billion in damages.
AEG played up the brothers' performance, probably in hopes of swaying the popular opinion of the company.
"For at least the third time since Michael Jackson's death and the filing of Katherine Jackson's lawsuit against AEG Live, Michael Jackson's brothers, the Jacksons, have chosen to work yet again with AEG Live," said Marvin Putnam, the head lawyer representing AEG in the case.
Katherine's legal team fired back, pointing out that the company had a near-monopoly on the concert industry.
"What are their options? Stop performing?" lawyer Kevin Boyle asked, before throwing a below-the-belt jab at his opponent. "Hopefully they'll survive their experience with AEG."
Boyle has a valid point, but the Jacksons may have hurt their side of the story by pushing for concert perks, Putnam revealed.
"In fact, just this past week the Jacksons specifically requested that AEG Live provide them with a VIP suite during the BET Experience," he said, noting that the company has also done four concerts with Jackson's sister Janet since his passing.
The BET Experience will also feature performances from artists including Beyonce, R. Kelly and New Edition.
