Last week, comedic television personality Stephen Colbert said good-bye to his mother, Lorna, who passed away at the age of 92 years old. After taking some time off for mourning, Stephen returned to "The Colbert Report" last night and stepped away from his character in a rare instance to pay tribute to the mother that he had just lost. The usually comical show had an incredibly emotional and heartfelt opening, where Stephen got to share the life of his mother with all of his audience and viewers.
With a slide-show of pictures fading in and out of view on the screen, Stephen Colbert used some airtime to talk about his mother Lorna's life. We learned that she was born the same week that women were granted the right to vote and that she met Stephen's father James at the age of 12. James and Lorna had 11 children together where "hugs never needed a reason in her house."
"I know that it may sound greedy to want more days with a person who lived so long," Colbert said. "But the fact that my mother was 92 does not diminish, it only magnifies the enormity of the room whose door has now quietly shut."
"Her favorite memory of prayer was a young mother tucking in her children," he said later on during the tribute segment. He paused to compose himself during this emotional speech and then continued, "We were the light of her life, and she let us know it until the end. And that's it. Thank you for listening."
