It's been a while since Elton John first announced that he was working on his first album of solo material since 2006's "The Captain and The Kid," but the vocalist released a preview trailer for his new LP "The Diving Board" on Monday. The record will hit stores in September.
The minute-long video displays John in the studio, performing live and tickling the ivories at his home, all while discussing what fans can expect from the release. The track "Go Home Again," a new song from the album, plays over John's commentary.
"What kind of music do I really want to make?" he asks himself in the clip. "I have to go backward to go forward again."
He added during an interview with Rolling Stone in February that the album has "everything I love about American music. Gospel, soul, country. It's the most adult record I can make at my age."
John's quotes about the genres and "going backward" seem to indicate that the album will be similar to "The Union," a 2010 record he performed with fellow pianist Leon Russell. T Bone Burnett, a producer well-versed in Americana after handling "The Union" and the "O Brother Where Art Thou?" soundtrack, will again be in charge for "The Diving Board."
The album will stick to a basic setup of John on piano and vocals, coupled with a bassist and drums, similar to his earliest work. Although John may be tending to the stripped-down approach in recent years, he experimented in 2012 with Australian duo Pnau for a remix album titled "Good Morning To The Night." John had begun recordings for "The Diving Board" before the Pnau sessions, but opted to push the recording back nearly a year to clear his head.
The new album will feature 13 songs penned by John's longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin.
