Just like they projected, Kanye West's new album Yeezus has gone to No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
According to Billboard.com and Nielsen SoundScan, Yeezus sold 327,000 copies within the last week. Though this is lower than the initial projection of 500,000 several weeks ago and still lower than the latest estimated of 350,000, it's still a decent accomplishment for the "New Slaves" rapper.
It is the sixth straight album of West's to reach the top of the charts (including his collaboration with Jay-Z, Watch The Throme). According to Billboard's archives, the only album of West's not to reach No. 1 was his 2004 debut College Dropout. That LP peaked at No. 2.
Yeezus has been doing well worldwide. On Monday, it was reported that West's latest album topped the charts in the U.K. and Australia. He sold 25,000 copies in Britain and barely edged ahead of Troy Cassar-Daley and Adam Harvey's The Great Country Songbook in Australia. Yeezus only topped the ARIA charts Down Under after a rarely seen recount occurred.
Yeezus has not just been selling well, it's a critically-acclaimed album as well. Though there has been controversy over misogyny in West's lyrics and a troublesome reference to Parkinson's disease, the overall perception has been positive.
J. Cole's Born Sinner was projected to go to No. 2 this week and did so, selling 297,000 copies. It was a strong week for hip-hop and R&B debuts. Mac Miller took the No. 3 spot, followed by former Destiny's Child member Kelly Rowland's Talk a Good Game.
