New details on Jay-Z's twelfth studio album Magna Carta Holy Grail just keep rolling in. Yesterday (June 27), the Brooklyn rapper released a video where he explains the writing process for his song with Frank Ocean, "Oceans."
The revealing clip shows Hova's process in songwriting, and it's clear that there's a reason Jay-Z is considered one of the best rappers in the game. When he can surprise industry vets like Timbaland, Rick Rubin and Pharrell Williams, fans can know that the album is going to be something special.
Though the lyrics to "Oceans" were revealed on Wednesday and it was clear that they made illusions to slavery and Jay-Z's affluent lifestyle, in the new Samsung ad, he shares how the two are connected.
"It's like me, now, no matter where I go in life, and the things that I accomplish, when you walk in that room, your past still comes with you. You hear people talking like, 'Oh that guy was the dealer from the projects and do-do-doom-doom.' Back again to that duality - it's a celebration of where we are now, on some big yacht, throwing champagne in the water. But the undertow if the thing is like the same water that brought us here, originally. I slaved, so it has this whole duality. And how we all rewrite history, even the stories that we were told about the history of America," Jay-Z explained to his collaborators (though Ocean does not appear in the promo).
At this point, Jay-Z begins turning his inspiration to a rap, revealing his writing process.
"I'm like an anti-Santa Maria talking about these stories, / The only Christopher we acknowledge is Wallace, that's Biggie Smalls, / Silk and fleeces lay on my Jesus, / Oh my God, I hope y'all don't get seasick," he raps.
Though the lyrics were altered in the final version of "Oceans," Williams and crew are clearly impressed, with jaws on the floor and smiles a mile wide.
