Rapper J Dilla (real name James Dewitt Yancey) died at the age of 32 back in 2006 from Lupas. His final album was written and recorded from his hospital bed as he was pretty much dying. The 29-track record was titled "Donuts" in honor of Dilla's love of the tasty treat. Now his uncle, baker Herman Hayes, has announced that he is opening a doughnut shop in honor of his late nephew whom he used to make doughnuts for when he was a child. The Detroit bakery will be called "Dilla's Delights."
J Dilla is not a household name in the hip-hop world, though admiration for his work has grown in the 7 years since his death. "Dilla's Delights" could easily become somewhat of a tourist attraction for hip-hop enthusiasts. Luckily the jukebox will be filled with J Dilla's discography. But the main attraction will be the doughnuts.
The Detroit News reports:
"The menu at Dilla's Delights - which will be open Mondays through Saturdays and during select Detroit Lions home games - will include about 20 different doughnuts whose names will pay tribute to Dilla, the influential and multi-faceted producer who died from complications from Lupus at age 32.
"The Conant Gardens Glaze is a nod to the neighborhood where Dilla was raised; Fantastic Fritters honor "Fantastic," the album Dilla put out with Detroit hip-hop troupe Slum Village; McNasty Macaroons tip a hat to "McNasty Filth," a track Dilla did with his side project Jaylib."
