It’s been a month and a half since Jay Z released his hugely anticipated album “Magna Carta Holy Grail” and a few weeks since the first single for the album, the Justin Timberlake-assisted “Holy Grail” hit radio. Now, Jay Z has finally released the official music video for the lead single, premiering first on Facebook: a first for the social networking site.
The “official visual” for “Holy Grail” premiered at noon today (Aug. 29) and unveiled a new reworking of the familiar top 10 hit. Though the studio album version of the track begins with the powerful crooning of Timberlake, the music video starts with a verse from Jay Z and doesn’t reach the Timberlake refrain until the 1:16 mark.
There are other notable differences in the music video version, most notably slowed down lines used for mixing with visual effects. “Sip from your cup ‘til it runneth over / Holy grail” is always in slow motion, as glasses spill over and shatter.
The video itself features Jay Z and Timberlake in a mostly empty, vast space performing amongst puddles of water, TVs playing a Mike Tyson boxing match and religious statues. Guns aim and shoot at Hova while he contemplatively raps into a lighted mirror.

According to Billboard, the music video for “Holy Grail” is the first from a major audience to have a 24-hour exclusive premiere on Facebook’s video player. This should really come as no surprise from Jay Z, who used Samsung heavily to promote “Magna Carta Holy Grail” leading up to its release, proving he’s no stranger to innovative partnership deals.
"Holy Grail" will hit YouTube and other video services tomorrow (Aug. 30) at noon.
