The fifth season of FOX's hit musical series "Glee" is returning this fall and special guest star Demi Lovato is sure to attract more viewers for many reasons. One of those reasons is because the 21-year-old singer will be playing Dani, the lesbian love interest of Naya Rivera's character Santana. This is clearly enticing for many viewers but Lovato does not want people to make such a huge deal about the gay relationship.
Clearly Demi's lesbian role is a way to gain more viewers for the show, but she does not want that to be the bottom line to her performance and the overall message. During a recent interview on Ryan Seacrest's radio show, Demi opened up about her upcoming role and wanted to make sure that the focus was on the show and her acting, not her character's sexuality.
"I don't want people to take from this, 'Oh my god, Demi is kissing a girl,'" she said. "I want people to take from it this is actually an incredible step in our generation today where I'm able to play a young lesbian on primetime TV. ... I'm honored to be able to be hopefully inspiring people with my character to be who they are and not be afraid of it or ashamed."
Do you think that Demi's appearance on "Glee" will be overshadowed by her character's sexuality?
"I'm good friends with a lot of the cast members already," Demi said of her experience on set. "So it was like walking into a giant hang-out."
Demi will be sharing her on-screen time with Naya Rivera who is pretty excited to be working with the pop star.
"She's playing my love interest, so I'm very, very excited about that," Naya said. "We get to sing a song together. It's going to be good, I'm excited to work with her."
"Glee" returns Thursday, September 26.
