It's obvious that Ariana Grande pulls heavily from '90s pop R&B on her debut album "Yours Truly." Now, in the video for the album's second single "Baby I," Grande plays in an urban landscape with her friends, all while giving watchful viewers little glimpses of nostalgia that help to highlight the 20-year-old singer's influence.
Though the song itself is undeniably catchy and slightly sexy, the video for "Baby I" is all fun. Grande hangs out with friends in sunny cityscape settings, from a rooftop to an apartment party to rafters on the side of a large building. While singing the sunny song, Grande shuffles her feet and looks prettily at the camera, all while crooning to her "baby."
It's hard to ignore the fun time throwbacks in the "Baby I" video. There's a payphone and a bright yellow boombox, two items not commonly used in the modern era. Grande's fashion choices are also notably throwback. She rocks some white shorts overalls, high-waisted light denim cutoffs and a white bandeau top. That's even before one notices the paint-splattered rain jackets and the purple converse on Grande's feet.
The video plays to the exact right kind of audience, allowing young viewers to pine for their childhood days and older viewers to think of '90s R&B. It's a win-win-win for Grande and her team.
