Ariana Grande kicked off her big "Yours Truly" release date not only with a No. 1 album on iTunes but with a performance at Rockefeller Plaza for NBC's "The Today Show" this morning. Grande, surrounded by dedicated fans performed two tracks from her new record, "The Way" featuring Mac Miller and "Tattooed Heart."
Grande's time on "Today" began with a short interview, wherein she shyly celebrated the commercial and critical success of "Yours Truly," which has been called the best debut of the year by some media outlets. "I mean, I was hoping it would do well, but I wasn't expecting it to go to No. 1 so quickly and I'm so incredibly excited and happy to be here," she said.
Shortly after talking to "Today" hosts, Grande blasted into "The Way," beginning with some vocal runs, guest rapper Mac Miller emerged from behind some backup dancers to give NYC fans a taste of his verse. Ending with "Thank you Based God" (a shoutout to rapper Lil B), Miller's verse threw Grande slightly off her game as she giggled at his improvisation, but she adorably recovered, perfectly singing "The Way" with an added blend of her youthful personality.
Later in the show, Grande took on the '50s-inspired "Tattooed Heart." A slower track, she took to the stage with light backing instrumentation and closed eyes, Grande sang the touching love song with an astounding amount of power, giving all those Mariah Carey comparisons even more weight.
Even though it leaked late last week, Grande's debut album "Yours Truly" hit iTunes and brick-and-mortar stores at midnight today (Sept. 3).
