Lady Gaga lives for the applause. No, really. The "Artpop" singer's latest single reflects on the nature of the relationship between the audience and the performer. If that meaning wasn't abundantly clear by her new single "Applause" and its art-inspired lyrics, the Mother Monster took to her official Twitter account today to further explain the song and, more importantly, why it means so much to her as a singer.
Gaga began her Twitter explanation early in the afternoon of Sept. 18, completely unprompted, firing back at critics who may think that she is nothing but an attention-seeker. "'Applause' is a very meaningful song to me, because it addresses what many think of as 'celebrities' today, that we 'do it' for the attention," she wrote. "But some of us are 'artists' in this group called 'celebrity,' & what we create doesn't live on unless theres an audience to remember it."
She then linked the thesis statement directly to the lyrics of "Applause."
"So I may need your attention at first, so I can sing you my song. But it's the 'Applause' after that let me know if I've entertained you. Entertainment makes people happy, I live for the 'Applause,' to know I've spread that. I live to hear you cheer, to just be a part of that," explained Gaga.
She concluded her Twitter thoughts with this: "Entertainment makes people happy, I love for the 'Applause,' to know I've spread that. I live to hear you cheer, to just be a part of that."
The audience-celebrating song "Applause" is the lead single from Lady Gaga's upcoming third album "Artpop." The record drops on Nov. 11.
