Music Mondays is in full effect. Justin Bieber has released the fourth single of his innovative project, "Recovery." Like "Heartbreaker," "All That Matters" and "Hold Tight" before it, "Recovery" was released slightly before the promised midnight on Sunday time, marked with a tweet from the Biebz at 11:13 p.m. EST.
"Recovery" follows very much in the footsteps of the recent Bieber singles. A stripped down R&B-influenced beat is the main focus of the track's instrumentation. Sprinklings of a vaguely Spanish acoustic guitar reveals itself underneath the heavy handed electronic drums, adding a unique twist to "Recovery" unheard in tracks like "Heartbreaker."
It's becoming incredibly evident that Bieber has grown into his voice. He's very much in control of his range in "Recovery," exercuting vocal runs and high notes particularly well. Unlike "Wait for a Minute" -- Bieber's recent collaboration with Tyga that featured the Biebz in whiney voice territory -- "Recovery" shows some restraint.
Lyrically, the song keeps in the Music Mondays canon, reflecting a Bieber break up (with Selena Gomez). This track shows that Bieber has, well, recovered from his heartbreak(er) and learned from his mistakes. "First I'll acknowledge our trust has been broken / As we search for recovery, I pray for us at night / Asking for a second chance, I never though I'd see your face again / I learned a lot through trial and error / Trying to make it right," Bieber sings in the revelatory chorus.
As is tradition now (it is a month into Music Mondays, after all), Bieber confirmed the meaning of his new single on his official website for the music journals component of the project. "Recovery is an acknowledgment that in life you can't just fall down and not get over things. You have to step up and recover. At the time, I was going through a very hard break up and when you're going through stuff like that you think that the world is just gonna end. Then you wake up the next day and realize that life has to go on. Recovery is that feeling you get when you start to move on and make things better for yourself, because yesterday is gone and tomorrow is here. -JB," he wrote.
Overall, "Recovery" adds to the very strong string of singles that have been a part of Bieber's Music Mondays. It's fascinating to see and hear the 19-year-old fully grow into himself and become an adult pop musician.
