LA Ink fans who are trying to get lips like celebrity tattoo artist Kat Von D now have one less option. Following some controversy from its name, one of the shades in Von D's lipstick line at Sephora, Painted Love, has been pulled from store shelves and online retailers, according to People.
The shade, called "Celebutard" has understandably upset both members of the disabled community and their parents, due to the offensive nature of the term "retard." Von D's play on the outdated, rude term first was called out in a post from Huffington Post Style blogger Kim Stagliano. The mother of three children with autism, Stagliano called out the makeup company on Nov. 4.
"People with disabilities are the last to benefit from what some might call 'political correctness,' and what I would call basic human decency. 'Retard' is still bandied about -- even by people I like a lot, like Howard Stern and his crew, who still have wack packers with the R word in their name," she wrote. "As a Mom of special needs kids -- and a friend to many people whose children have Down Syndrome, I wouldn't put this lipstick on a pig."
In response to the controversy surrounding the name, "Celebutard," a light pink shade with hints of nude, is no longer available for sale.
No word is out on whether or not the color will return with a different name.
Though the most eyebrow raising name in the Painted Love collection by far, "Celebutard" was not the only slightly tantalizing title. Other colors include "Backstage Bambi," "Lolita," "Hellbent" and "Underage Red." Those are a little saucy but more or less fit for an edgy lipstick collection. Meanwhile, "Celebutard" went a little too far.
Von D, the creator of the collection, was not pleased with the color being taken off the market. In a now deleted tweet, Von D wrote, "At the end of the day, it's just a f---ing lipstick."
