Inside Llewyn Davis already looks to be an extremely promising cinematic experience, both with a great story written by the Coen brother and a cast that includes Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan and Justin Timberlake. But the music in the film seems to be just as much of highlight as everything else thanks to none other than T Bone Burnett.
In the middle of the film, folk singer/songwriter Llewyn Davis (Isaac) finds himself in need of work and agrees to accompany Jim Berkey (Timberlake) for one of his new songs. It's protest song called "Please Mr. Kennedy" and it's about the President sending the singer to outer space against his will.
The song is supposed to be silly, intentionally bad. That's the whole point. Only with Burnett, Isaac, Adam Driver who plays musician Al Cody and Timberlake, they just can't help it. It just happens to be one incredibly catchy song.
Huffington Post shared some insights from Burnett and the actors/musicians on how the song came to be and why it's accidentally so good.
Burnett explained: "It is a joke song, but here's the thing ... even if a song is supposed to be bad in a film, it still has to be great. Because if you put bad music in a film, it's just bad -- then the film's bad. You can put good music in a film and say it's bad and the audience will believe it's bad, but it will still be good and they will still be entertained by it, even though they're told it's bad. And, on top of it, underneath all of that, it really is great."
