Season two of Fox's The Following has kept fans of season one thoroughly entertained so far. Tensions rose in episode one and discoveries were made in episode two, with plenty of violence in each. But when episode three, entitled "Trust Me," came into the mix, viewers got a great taste of all the twists of season one in just one airing. Some things we learned is that Ryan Hardy is still on top of his game, Emma is still super crazy, and you still can't trust anybody even when you assume Joe Carroll is dead. (SPOILERS to follow)
Clearly with a title like "Trust Me," we'll be focusing on someone who is sued to getting the trust of others: Joe Carroll. After murdering the Reverend, Joe needs to calm down Mandy and deal with Judy. This might seem like an easy task, considering Joe has countless followers still out in the world despite his assumed death, but maybe he's a little out of work.
Needless to say, things get a little out of hand, and he has to really deal with Judy, who is worried that the serial killer she brought into her home would ... well end up killing her and her daughter. Despite Joe having a soft spot for Mandy and promising to leave them alone, Judy attempts to kill him, fails and is then duct-taped to a chair! When Judy tells Mandy to kill Joe, the young impressionable girl who revealed earlier that she views Joe as a father (although he's only been there for one year) decides to kill her actual mother. Joe burns down Judy's property and leaves with young Mandy to meet up with his attention-getting followers.
Speaking of...
Mark decides that Emma is an important piece of the Joe Carroll puzzle. Carlos, Luke and Giselle don't agree, but let the less dominant twin go ahead and meet up with her. From this meeting (and when Ryan tells Mike about his investigations outside of the FBI), we learn that the body originally thought to be Joe's at the end of last season was his half-brother's, thus confusing the FBI. So now Emma knows her beloved Joe is still alive and that this new group of followers is trying to get him to come out of hiding. The audience knows that this is coming to fruition.
Meanwhile, Ryan Hardy gets dealt a hard blow when he figures out (in classic a Ryan Hardy way) that his possible love interest and victim of the subway stabbings, Lily Gray, was in on the whole thing. She too is a follower of Joe Carroll and, as it is revealed in the final scene of the episode, is the mother of the murderous twins!
So what do the followers have for us in tonight's episode, "Family Affair"? Well the title could be a clear indicator, but check out these special previews for the next episode of The Following right here:
