According to a new post on his Facebook page, 39-year-old New York Yankees star shortstop Derek Jeter will retire at the end of the 2014 Major League Baseball season. Though his team is currently dealing with the controversy over third-basemen Alex Rodriguez and his doping scandal, Jeter has still decided to look past this harrowing time and allow fans to enjoy his final season with the only team he's ever played for.
"I want to start by saying thank you," Jeter's retirement message begins. "I know they say that when you dream you eventually wake up. Well, for some reason, I've never had to wake up. Not just because of my time as a New York Yankee but also because I am living my dream every single day."
Jeter goes on to explain why he has decided to end his career, citing his recent injuries and how he's just pretty much getting too old.
Derek has played for the Yankees since 1995.
"It was months ago when I realized that this season would likely be my last. As I came to this conclusion and shared it with my friends and family, they all told me to hold off saying anything until I was absolutely 100 percent sure," Jeter said. "And the thing is, I could not be more sure. I know it in my heart."
Jeter added: "The 2014 season will be my last year playing professional baseball."
