Bob Geldof and girlfriend Jeanne Marine get engaged after heroin overdose death of musician's daughter Peaches

Irish singer-songwriter Sir Bob Geldof has finally proposed to his girlfriend of 18 years, French actress Jeane Marine. This exciting engagement is bittersweet though because it comes during a time of mourning, in the wake of Geldof's daughter Peaches' recent death. According to Marine's friend Jerry Hall, the couple's recent tragedy inspired the need for something positive in their lives.

"Bob has proposed," Hall said. "She is over the moon. Jeanne Marine has been a rock and a tower of strength over this. I'm so excited for her I am bursting to tell someone."

Hall, the former wife of Mick Jagger, went on to explain how Marine and Geldof have had a rough few weeks.

"Bob and Jeanne have been through hell, but they are determined something positive will come out of it," she said. "After all the sadness, we need something to focus on which will bring joy and light."

Geldof and Marine lay to rest Peaches this week, who died at the age of 25.

"I've just got back from Texas and accompanied Jeanne to the funeral," Hall told The Daily Mail. "It was, of course, terribly sad, but she told me that Bob had asked her to marry him out of the blue."

She added: "I'm so happy for her. It makes you realize we all have to value what we have."
