According to a number of reports, Netflix is hoping to make an exclusive new Star Trek series after seeing success with the streaming episodes it now carries. Unfortunately, both CBS and Viacom own the rights to many of the titles, so it isn't going to be an easy process. Hopefully though, we'll be seeing a new series sooner rather than later!
Though it might seem like a simple solution, the two companies with the rights don't see eye-to-eye on occasions like this. Plus Viacom likes to deal with Amazon, so that is definitely an issue as well.
Author and producer Larry Nemecek recently tried to clear up this rumor by explaining what he, as a Trek insider knows of these "talks."
"As we know by now, Netflix has changed the TV/media landscape yet again by becoming a platform of clout with original shows like House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black-popular not only with fans, but critics...and now the award shows," he explained on his website. "It's in Netflix's interest to be casting about for new shows-including those from known franchises. I understand Star Trek is one of them-especially as Trek's 737 hours of "reruns" performs as a top draw ON Netflix. As I understand it, there have been overtures. But none taken. So far."
So a new Star Trek series could happen, but for now we'll just have to hold onto rumors and speculation until we hear further.
