HBO's newest series, The Leftovers, debuts this weekend and it is sure to be one of the most exciting television events of the year. Author Tom Perrotta and Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof have teamed up for a unique new series about what a small town full of people that remained after an apparent "rapture" incident go on with their lives. In this preview of the show's pilot episode, we're breaking down the top five reasons why you should be tuning in this weekend.
1. The Cast and Crew
We mentioned the creators (Perrotta and Lindelof) who are reason enough to be excited for this series, but we should also bring up the fact that Peter Berg (Lone Survivor, Friday Night Lights) directed the first two episodes.
Also, the cast is full of under-appreciated stars that absolutely shine in this morose new series. Expect a lot of praise for series stars Justin Theroux, Liv Tyler, Christopher Eccleston, and pretty much the rest of the cast.
2. The "Rapture" happened ... now what?
If The Leftovers can be summed up in one word, we'd chose "confusion." Imagine yourself in a situation where 2% of the world's population vanished as if chosen for the Rapture, yet you're still around. What would you do?
Three years after the incident, the small town of Mapleton manages to carry on day-today routines but with an added sense of despair. A cult calling itself "The Guilty Remnant" has popped up and is freaking out the public by not talking and smoking cigarettes. That's all they do.
A guy named "Holy Wayne" is plotting something on the outskirts of town while a former religious leader is calling the departed heathens.
3. Human Interaction
The Leftovers might seem to have an incredibly specific and "out of this world" subject matter, but relationships between people remain the same: loving, awkward and even hostile.
The Chief of Police has to keep his town together, but disagrees with his mayor. Check out this clip below to see the kind of back-and-forth these two deal with:
4. Composer Max Richter
The music behind The Leftovers molds into the storyline as if each note as depressed and cold as some of the characters we're seeing on screen. During the premiere's climax, only the score guides us through one of the most difficult scenes of the series.
Composer Max Richter makes The Leftovers a study in expression in the pilot episode.
5. The Mystery
Will we ever find out what happened to the "heroes" that departed on that fateful day? Do we want to know? These are the questions plaguing our characters - and these are the questions that will keep viewers hooked.
Make sure you tune in Sunday June 29 on HBO at 10PM EST to check out this incredible new series, The Leftovers.
