J.J. Abrams' films Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness were both Earth-centric sci-fi movies about a legendary crew of a space ship. Sure they were good, but audiences were a bit stuck too close to home in these blockbusters. Now that Roberto Orci is helming Star Trek 3, the new director says that Earth won't be the focus of his movie. We're going to go into deep space in 2016.
While appearing on the Humans From Earth podcast (iTunes link) this week, Orci announced that the USS Enterprise will be on a five-year mission - as was hinted at the end of Into Darkness, which Orci wrote.
"In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films - especially the 2009 [Star Trek] - was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren't the characters they were in the original series," Orci explained. "They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie. So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters than you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space."

So at least we have some sort of beginning to a plot for the next Star Trek movie and it sounds very interesting and possibly challenging. Do you think Orci can handle the task at hand? Let us know in the comments section below!
