One of the most interesting aspects of HBO's brand new series The Leftovers is the focus on youth culture during an incredible time. How would teenagers handle an alleged "Rapture" event occurring? While speaking to HBO.com, creators Tom Perrotta and Damon Lindelof addressed one specific scene involving an iPhone App of a "Spin-The-Bottle" type game that basically summed up how these teens are dealing with being leftover.
"Teenagers are nihilistic enough as it is but in this world, that sense is definitely heightened," Lindelof stated.
In Perrotta's book, the game was a bit different. This is where director Peter Berg added his own spin on the game.
"This is a case where moving from book to film involved people bringing new imagination to it," Perrotta said.
In the book, the game involved players sending a couple into a room for alone time, or dismissing someone from the game.
"You could reward a sexy couple or you could eliminate your rival by sending them off," he explained.
Berg decided to change the game a bit, with a spin choosing your mate and the app choosing the action.
"Teenagers are going off in closets together in our real world," Lindelof said of Berg's directorial decision. "What's different about this world?"
"It's interesting to look at the youth culture in the wake of an event like this," he continued. "We're inclined to think that the younger that you are, the more adaptable you are in terms of accepting, 'This is my world now.' But there is this magnification that occurs in a world that feels like it's spinning out of control."
"You know that there's going to be an aftershock; you just don't know when it's going to come."
