Angel Di Maria, Louis Van Gaal, Wayne Rooney, Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera, Robin Van Persie & Marcos Rojo: Summer Stars Can't Save Manchester United Unless They Land Top Transfer

Manchester United are currently still in the midst of a terrible fall from grace, largely down to David Moyes' terrible year in charge, but despite Louis Van Gaal showing plenty of promise in his opening months in charge, the fans simply cannot expect an immediate change of fortunes, as shown with their opening day defeat to Swansea City. Van Gaal has made Wayne Rooney captain, made Robin Van Persie happy again, and signed stars Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera and Marcos Rojo, but they need so much more. Nobody can save the Old Trafford-based club, but if any one can, top transfer target Angel Di Maria could, if they can convince him to leave Real Madrid.

The club added Shaw and Herrera early on, and recently captured Rojo, who will add to their struggling squad, but it's clear they need much more, and that spark that will help them win games. Rojo is happy to be at the club. He explained "I am young and am very keen to continue to learn the game, so playing for such an experienced technical coach as Louis van Gaal is a fantastic opportunity for me. I have joined United to work hard with my team-mates to win trophies and I know that the manager shares that ambition."

Could Rojo's Argentinian teammate Di Maria be exactly what the club need? He's believed to be available for around $80 million, but PSG are the top club in the running, largely due to their UEFA Champions League place. The only thing United can better PSG at, are the wages due to financial fair play restrictions. Di Maria would bring goals, pace, energy, assists and experience to a squad that needs a hero.

United might not win any trophies any time soon, but a marquee signing like Di Maria could be the turning point. There's not long left to sign him, but if they want to win, they need to sign the Argentina star.
